About Freshwater Photos

Since the age of seventeen I have carried a camera nearly every day, in an attempt to document the world as I see it. Shooting many different subjects, I rely on the magical powers of light to direct me.  My belief is that photography is a way of life, a path to discovery, and good therapy - and that the viewer, in addition to seeing the subject of a photograph, might also see something of the human behind the lens.

I created Freshwater Photos in 1997, as a company to distribute my photographs of freshwater environments, and to encourage awareness of freshwater conservation issues. Freshwater Photos has since expanded to include catalogs of fine art and documentary photographs.

I hold an undergraduate degree in Communication Arts and Environmental Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and attended the MFA program in Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where I also served on the faculty of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

I'm also a Certified Archivist with over thirty years of experience in the archives  profession. I have supervised grant projects funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA),  Save America’s Treasures, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).  My employers and consulting clients have included: the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research, the National Geographic Society, AT&T Broadband and Internet, Playboy Enterprises,  the Archdiocese of Chicago, Naropa University, the University of Colorado, Pulse of the Planet, the Kids’ Science Challenge, and I am currently the Executive Director of the Steelworks Center of the West.

I'm a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists,  the National Science Teachers Association, the Society of American Archivists, the Society of Rocky Mountain Archivists, and the Academy of Certified Archivists. Currently I'm the Communications Director for the Visual Materials Section of the Society of American Archivists, and the Past President of the Society of Rocky Mountain Archivists.
