On September 16, 2015, a magnitude 8.3 earthquake occurred off the coast of central Chile, about 29 miles west of the town of Illapel. The quake caused a tsunami impacting the coast at La Serena, with wave heights up to 15 feet causing flooding and destruction of infrastructure.
