Although a single city, the colonial-style historic center of La Serena contrasts with the high-rise resorts along the Pacific coast beach, creating the appearance of two separate municipalities. The University of La Serena campus separates the two districts. Google Maps led me on a walking shortcut between the two areas that emphasized the separation.
